Following the trials held at Millfield in September three Kelly College swimmers, Jack Cockerton, Thomas Howe and Whitney Bowrin, were selected to represent Division 5 at the English Schools Inter-Divisional Swimming Championships in Gloucester.
Jack Cockerton, Kelly College’s Boys Swimming Captain, competed in the 200m Individual Medley, and the two relay events in the Intermediate Age Group. In his individual medley swim he had to work hard on the final length to secure the silver medal in this event, narrowly touching out Robert Saunders from Division 11.
Thomas Howe was also selected for 200 Individual Medley and the Junior Boys 4 x 50m freestyle relay team. This relay team of Thomas Howe ( Kelly College), Anthony James (Plymouth Leander), Chris Harber ( Swindon) and Shane Traill (Millfield) set a new competition record ( 1:45.33) in the heat and with a time of 1:45.70 in the final secured first pace points for the division and gold medals for the swimmers.
Whitney Bowrin selected for the 4 x 50m Freestyle Junior Girls team put in two fine performances. The girl’s team of Samantha Tubb (Bath), Whitney Bowrin (Kelly College), Charlotte Kane (Plymouth Leander) and Shelley Yeates (Bath) qualified in 8th position and then triumphed in the final from the outside lane with a bronze medal in a scintillating finish.
Division 5 won the Penge Trophy for the Junior Boys collective achievements and were runners up overall in the competition to Division 12.
