Double Gold for Matthew Henry & Kelly College

15th August, 2004

Last weekend, Oddicombe Beach near Torquay, was the venue for the Devon County Amateur Swimming Association’s Open Water Championships.  Matthew Henry (14) of Kelly College took part in the 16 and under Devon Championships and 16 and under Open Championships.

This was Matthew’s first venture into open water swimming and he was more than pleased to find the sea was not too cold and flat.  Matthew had gone to Cornwall the weekend before to have practice swimming in the sea and had found himself surrounded by jelly fish, which he found rather off-putting.  However, he was overjoyed (to put it mildly) to find no jelly fish in the Devon waters.

The 17 and over 3000m event went off first and five minutes later it was the turn of the 16 and under swimmers to set off on their 1500m.  Matthew took the lead from the start and never looked back, finishing nearly two minutes in front of the second 16 and under swimmer, so gaining first place in both the Devon Championships and the 16 and under Open Championship.

Although Matthew was very cold after the swim, a cup of hot chocolate, warm clothing and a brisk run along the shore line soon found him ready for the presentations when he was awarded two gold medals and a trophy by the Devon County ASA President, Mrs. Sue Butler.
