Devon County ASA Open Water Swimming Competition
Devon County Amateur Swimming Association held their Open water swimming Competitions last Saturday at Oddicombe Beach, Torquay. Kelly College had several representatives willing to exchange the warmth of the indoor swimming pool for the cold of the sea.
Samantha Lake, on the back of her successful 4th place for Great Britain in the World Long Distance Triathlon Championships held in Denmark, and in her first ever Open Water Swim, took first place in the 3000 metres 17 years and over Open and Devon Championships. Sam was well ahead of her nearest female rivals and finished fourth in the actual race, being led in by three of the men.
In the Mens 3000metres Brian Wilson of Kelly College swam well to receive his finishers certificate in an event that included Oliver White of Exmouth the former Tavistock S.C. Mens Captain, just back from having swam the English Channel in a time just over 9 hours.
The 12 to 16 years 1500metres event for boys was where Kelly College had their biggest number of entries. Oliver and Joshua Lake, Matthew Stacey, all swimming Open Water events for the first time, and Matthew Henry, defending Champion from last year. In the Devon Championship, Matthew Henry(15) placed first with Matthew Stacey(13) second. The Open Championship, again Matthew Henry was first and Matthew Stacey third. Both are hoping to swim in the National Open Water Championships at Holme Pierre Pont, Nottingham, next Saturday.
