SW Region Biathlon - National Qualifier
The South West Region’s qualification event for the 2005 National Championships was held on Saturday 15th October, at Milfield School, in glorious sunshine. Kelly College sent an 18 strong team to compete for a place in the National Champions to be held in November, in Sheffield. The biathlon consists of two separate events; the first is a swim and the second a cross-country run, both over varying distance according to the age of the competitor.
The swim was the first event, held in Milfield School’s 50m pool. The day started well with all of the team having good swims, with Flora Duffy (17/18yrs), Mathew Henry (15/16yrs) and Cameron Carpenter-Warren (12/13yrs) posting the fastest swim for their age groups.
The Cross-country circuit was on good ground with only slight undulations, making it a fast course. Sam Straughen (11/12yrs) had an impressive run leading his age group from the gun to the tape and Rich Brady (snr men) posting the fastest time in his category. The rest of the team had good performances, backing up their earlier swims making for good final results.
With points being award for the swim and run times and added together to give final score. The first six individuals and the first 2 teams each category qualifies by right.
