Two New World Records for Claire

6th March, 2006

Kelly College Students Claire Cashmore and David Hill travelled to Sheffield’s Pond’s forge international pool at the weekend for the National Disability Junior Short Course Swimming Championships. This event attracted more than 200 under 18’s disability swimmers including this year youngsters from Hungary and Israel.

Claire broke her own Senior World Record’s in both the 100m I.M. and 50m Freestyle and a Senior European record in the 100m Freestyle. Her impressive tally for the weekend also included four national Junior Records, eight gold medals and five personal best times.

Claire was delighted with the times she set, as this was her last year as a Junior. Claire said “I wanted to leave some good Junior Records that I hope will stand for a long time”.

David also had a good weekend entering six events over the two days of competition. He broke three national Junior Records, gained four gold and two silver medals and five personal best times. David said “I was pleased with my 100m Backstoke swim and breaking James Crisp’s (British disability number one backstroker) Junior record added a bonus to the results. David has one more year as a Junior and will hope to lower this time and more records next year.

David and Claire who are studying for their AS & A levels respectively are now back at Kelly College training hard for the Disability World Championships which take place at the end of November in Durban, South Africa. They must qualify for the event during competitions in July and August. David and Claire have also been selected for the 2nd Paralympic World Cup which takes place in Manchester in May.
