Western Counties Youth Championships


Kelly College swimmers were in great form again at the Western Counties Youth Championships held at Millfield School during the Bank holiday weekend.

The squad of 16 youth swimmers chalked up an impressive 55 finals between them, winning 16 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Seventeen year old Jack Cockerton was back to his best again and convincingly won the 200m Individual Medley in 2.09.69.  Jack also went on to win the 400m  Individual Medley pushed along by team mate 16 year old Thomas Howe, who finished a close 2nd, but winning his age group in 4.43.14 in response to Jack’s 4.41.82.  Tom also produced many other outstanding swims including the 200m & 400m freestyle, winning silver in both events.  Tom struck gold again in the 100m freestyle.

Sixteen year old Matthew Henry also had an outstanding competition.  Matthew won gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, silver in the 200m Individual Medley and bronze in the 50m Butterfly.

Paralympians David Hill (17) and Claire Cashmore (18) used the Championships as preparation for the International World Cup to be held next weekend in Manchester, where teams from all over the world will be competing.  David Hill secured wins in the 50m, 100m Freestyle and the 200m Individual Medley in his category.  David also achieved two able bodied finals, finishing and competing very impressively against the best in the South West in his age group.  Claire took a clean sweep in the 100m Freestyle and the 100m Backstroke events.

Jan Langton (19) won gold in the 50m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley and silver in the 100m Freestyle and Backstroke in her disability category.

Boys Team Captain, Luke Wakefield (17) secured silver in the 100m Butterfly, Amanda Sanderson won bronze in the 200m Backstroke and Joshua Lake took bronze in the 50m freestyle.

Other finalists were Megan Mackenzie (14), Daniel Kidwell (17), Sophie Stanford (18), Laura Sprague (14) and Jonathan Sprague (15).
